1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
It was called cult of the dead because the Egyptians cared so much about the afterlife and took many steps to get there. [page one first section]

2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
It was said to be true that preservation was essential if the dead were to enjoy paradise.[ first page, 4th paragraph]

3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian

One embalming technique includes making an incision near the abdomen and removing all internal organs except the heart because they believed the heart was the source of all emotion. After they removed the organs they soaked and cleaned them with wine, spices, and cedar oil. Afterwards, the embalmer uses a hook shaped needle to scrape out the brain through the nostril. Then the embalmer packs all organisms and the body in natron to dry them. After they've been there for a month, he wraps the organs in cloth and puts them in jars. The body is stuffed with saw dust and wads of linen where the organs used to be and he sews up the original cut. He also creates artificial body parts that may have already decomposed such as hair and eyes. [page 2, ‘ the embalmer’s recondite art’]

4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was. The embalmer packs in waded linens under the skin, which is comparable to silicon. Face or sometimes whole body is colored if the skin is an oddly tone. [page 2, ‘ the embalmer’s recondite art’]

1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
It was called this because Egyptian life revolved around death and the afterlife, so they took great care into preserving the dead, so they would have a good “life” in the afterlife (page 1 paragraph 2)

2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
It was essential because they believed if you went to the afterlife missing a limb or a body part, it would remain lost forever, and you wouldn’t be able to fully enjoy paradise.( page 1 paragraph 2)

3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian

They cut open the abdomen, and they removed all of the internal organs except for the heart and cleaned them. Then they flushed out the body with cedar oil to dissolve the remaining tissue. After that they removed the brain with a special tool through the nose. They put powdered natron inside the body for about a month. Next the embalmer wraps the dried internal organs in cloth, and puts them in the body or in jars. Then he sews up the cut that was made in the abdomen. He weaves artificial hair into the original and out painted eyes into the sockets. Lastly he wraps the body in linen.( page 2, embalmers recondite art)
4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.

After a month or so of being dried out, the body’s skin has become very shrunken in appearance, so the embalmer places wads of linen under the skin with tiny cuts to make the face look fuller, just like a plastic surgeon would put silicon in different areas of someone’s body. ( page 2, paragraph 4)

Andrew Harris & Tiffany Kilts

1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead"?
The Egyptians had such extreme religious beliefs in the afterlife that the preservation of bodies became sort
of a cult; the cultists could be considered as the embalmers.

2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
It was extremely important. Egyptians believed that if you were missing a part of your body then you would be
without that specific body part for your entire afterlife. For example, if you went without your heart, you
would, esentially, become heartless and cold; without your heart, you probably had no chance at an afterlife,
anyways.

3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptians
The embalmer makes an incision in the abdomen with a flint knife. He pulls out all of the internal organs
except for the heart (because it held all emotion) and proceeds to cleanse them in spices such as myrrh and
cinnamon. They are also often cleansed with wine. He flushes out the abdomen with cedar oil to dissolve the
remaining tissue. The organs are then either put into jars or returned to the cavity.
To remove the brain, the embalmer used a long, hooked instrument. The instrument was forced into the nostril
and through the skull so that he could scrape out the internal cavity, which is also flushed with cedar oil to
flush out the remaining brain matter.

4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
The body is powdered with nitron. Afterwards, he makes cuts and places cloth into the cuts, proceeding up to
sew them shut. He adds fake eyes and weaves fake hair into the original hair. He colors the face and sometimes the whole body with ocher (red if male, yellow if female).
The body is then bandaged.

1. Describe why mummification was called "The cult of the dead".
It was called this because they have religious beliefs of an afterlife. It was important that you preserved your physical self for it, and this was essential if you were to enjoy paradise. (Paragraph 3, first page)

2. How important was mummification in regards to your enjoyment of paradise?
Any body part that you lost in the grave you would be deprived for all eternity. (Paragraph 3, first page)

3. Describe the embalming techniques used by Ancient Egyptian
An embalmer would begin by making a cut along the left side of the abdomen, through this he could pull out internal organs except for the heart. The embalmer would then clean the organs with wine and spices. Afterwards, he cleanses the abdominal cavity with cedar oil in order to dissolve the rest of the soft tissue. Then he removes the brain. When the body is cleaned, he packs the organs and the body in natron (a powdery mixture of sodium carbonate and bicarbonate) to dry them. After a month, he washes all the parts again in more spices. Then he wraps the internal organs individually in a linen cloth and puts them in the abdominal cavity, and fills it with sawdust, linen, tar or mud. Then the embalmer sews up the original cut. Then he puts painted eyes into the eye sockets. (Second paragraph in box on back)

4. Explain what "ancient plastic surgery" was.
When an embalmer makes tiny cuts and packs wads of linen under the skin to rid the face and necks of lines and wrinkles. (Paragraph 5 in box on back)

I don't think your answer to #1 fully answered why it was called 'the cult of the dead'.

to Alejandro Potter and bill obasi

for your number 4 i disagree with your answer "its like how plastic surgeons do it today" because today's plastic surgery usually involves exterior cutting and repairing of the face, when the Egyptians went inside the body.

To Duncan and Jordan

i like the way you worded number 3. it is almost exactly how i grasped the consept in my mind.

-Jack

Becca, Fremio and Taylor: I liked your number 3 a lot. It was very detailed and explained every step needed to do the process.

Sarah and Niara: For your number 2, it was what you said but also it is important to say that they could only be guaranteed to get to the afterlife if they were rapped properly.

Anónimo dijo...

Jack and Ben,
I like how you do number one so short and sweet. You stated the right answer and didn't go off into another topic.

Anthony and Maria,
I thought you should have listed more ideas on number 4 like the brain and the organs.
